In
1998, a group of successful businessmen met informally to discuss
the possibility of forming a new bank in Bartow County. That meeting
ultimately began the groundwork for what would eventually become
Century Bank of Georgia. The organizing directors felt that Bartow
County was in need of a new, independent community
bank; a bank that would not be controlled from outside the state,
but rather owned and managed by directors and officers right here
in our local community. The idea came to fruition over the next
two years.
The organizing directors devised the business plan, delineated
the community’s need for a new financial institution, and
opted to apply for a state bank charter. As the new millennium approached,
a name for the new bank quickly became apparent…Century Bank
of Bartow County. “Century” in recognition of a new
bank for the new century, and “Bartow County” to emphasize
our home and focus.
Century Bank would be only the second state chartered bank headquartered
in Bartow County. After receiving approval to proceed from both
the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance and the Federal Deposit
Insurance Corporation, the sale of shares in the new bank was commenced.
The stock subscription was sold quickly, and in just a matter of
months, the new bank met its capital needs.
The Board of Century Bank decided on a headquarters site to be
located at 215 East Main Street in Cartersville, demonstrating the
bank’s commitment to Bartow as well as to the vibrancy of
the downtown area of Cartersville and its continued importance to
our county.
On June 29, 2000, Century Bank of Bartow County opened for business,
and a new era of community banking began.
In 2001, the bank opened its first branch office, located inside
a new grocery store on the west side of Cartersville. Then in January
2006, the office was relocated to a new strip center at 799 West
Avenue in Cartersville. This move allowed the addition of a drive-up
window and ATM to better meet customers’ needs.
In August 2006, Century Bank of Bartow County changed its name
to Century Bank of Georgia to reflect the larger service footprint
the bank now covered. Land was acquired in Calhoun, Georgia for
the first non-Bartow County branch office, and in March 2007, the
Belmont office was opened at 415 West Belmont Drive (Highway 53)
in a modular facility. Completion of the bank’s new prototype
modern banking office is scheduled for early 2008.
The bank’s senior management team comprised of Rick Drews,
CEO; David Caswell, President/COO; and Rhonda Massengill, CFO continues
to lead the bank with the vision of the original organizers: providing
the most convenient delivery methods for quality banking services
for our clients; making prompt, local decisions; providing comprehensive
financial resources to small business owners and entrepreneurs;
and giving freely of our time and resources to the communities we
serve.
